Being in the IT industry for a long time, knowing a bit about SEO and owning my own business made me think about what type of advice I could give to people on the market for a new website design. The advice is simple: Use a template.

Here’s why.

It’s fast. It’s easier and it will give you what you need to have to set up your business online. It doesn’t mater what your business is, there is a perfect template for that, you just need to find it. But in the sea of well designed templates which one is for you?

Here are the questions you need to ask yourself:

What is my business about and what pages do I need?

Almost all templates now try to offer everything, and you won’t save money if you choose a simpler one-but you will save a lot of time if what your business needs is clearly defined and those pages are created with a purpose. For example: a shopping website doesn’t need an about page, but a hotel website must not be without it. A marketing agency website doesn’t need a shopping cart, or a gallery, but it should have an “our pricess” page. On the other hand, a website that promotes a mobile phone app must have buttons on the homepage for downloading the app.

What CMS do I need?

CMS or Content Management System defines a way you will place content on your website and manage it. By content we mean images, text, links etc. At the moment there are three types of CMS that are widely being used. WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. Here are their differences:

WordPress:

Is the most widespread of all. Even Business2Community uses WordPress. The platform has about 15000 plugins and counting… It is easy to install and moderate, quite cheap to maintain and has over 5000 themes and counting…

Drupal:

Drupal is a CMS used by MTV and The Onion, just to give an example. It harder to use than wordpress and is for the more advanced.

Joomla:

Joomla is somewhere between WordPress and Drupal when it comes to usage, installation and maintainance. It is being used for Porsche’s website. I am not sure how many templates are there for this CMS, but they are not free.

There are also Adobe’s Site Catalyst and Microsoft’s CMS, and a lot more independent ones.

If you don’t have much content to manage, you can use one page templates. They are great for apps, conferences…basically every type of presentation based websites.

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old.
